First things first, the metaverse and web 3.0 is not the same thing at all. Though many people things that those are the same but there is plenty of difference between these two technologies still both use blockchain technology.
The Internet is changing constantly and today’s internet is not the same as in 1990 or 2000. It’s evolving day by day and experts predict that the metaverse and web 3.0 will be the next version of the internet this is the reason many people use these two words interchangeably but as we said earlier both are not the same. So, what are those differences that make these two technologies different? Let’s find the difference in this article.
Before moving ahead let’s first clarify the concept of web 3.0 and metaverse so that it would be easier to understand the difference.
Remember the time frame of 1990-2004 when the web 1.0 was popular and people use the internet to find information only. Back in that time, the number of people who consumed content is very high compared to the people who created content. Forget those days and later it comes Web 2.0.
Web 2.0 is the internet that we are using today and it is centered on user-created content instead of just using it to look up a piece of information. Users interact with each other on the internet via different social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Skype, YouTube, and so on by messaging, leaving comments, sharing videos, like videos, and many more. But still, these are going back to the date and Web 3.0 is coming to take over web 2.0.
Web 3.0 is also known as the internet of the future. Since we already have web 2.0 and are able to interact over the internet which could not be done in the 90s and early 2000s, so with web 3.0 we can expect some more intensive and realistic interactions.
The concept of web 3.0 is not implemented properly and this is why there is no proper definition of web 3.0 technology but all the features and signs of this version of the internet indicate that it will operate on blockchain technology. In a specific term, it means that instead of spending time on social media platforms and websites that are owned and monetizing the data that we created, we are going to use search engines and social platforms that use blockchain technology to allow us to control that content and data.
The term metaverse was first introduced by famous writer Neal Stephenson in 1992 in his science fiction novel named Snow Crash. Neal Stephenson used the word “Metaverse” to describe a 3D virtual world.
Web 3.0 focuses on the development of the internet of the future in the meantime metaverse focuses on how we will experience the next-generation internet. Creators of these virtual worlds say that we can use virtual technology to enter the metaverse and we will move between the virtual worlds using our digital avatars. Each of these virtual worlds can be described as its own metaverse and we already exploring some of them via online games like Decentraland, Fortnite, and Rec Room.
Hope now it is clear what is metaverse and what is Web3.0. Now let’s find the difference between these two trendy words,
Web 3.0 is essentially a version of the internet that represents the advancement of the internet and our online identities for the future generation. On the other hand, metaverse describes a computer domain in virtual reality where we may interact with 3D objects using VR goggles and other devices. In a word metaverse is a part of Web 3.0.
Metaverse is built using computer & human interaction methods using VR, 3D design, and modeling. On the other hand, web 3.0 will rely on the newest version of HTTP and blockchain to map semantic relationships. This semantic web is about connecting internet data intelligently and making it machine-readable.
Web 3.0 will serve the same purpose similar to web 2.0. Users will utilize web 3.0 to look up information and communicate with other users to create or consume information. On the other hand, metaverse will open new applications including 3D virtual collaboration as well as social VR.
Like web 2.0, web 3.0 will be built on an open-source code base. No one person or entity invented the current internet. However, it is impossible to attribute the creation of web 3.0 to one person or corporation. On the other side, the metaverse will at least initially be shaped by the coordinated efforts of a small number of businesses.
Although Web 3.0 and the metaverse aren’t exactly the same thing They aren’t even competing entities. Therefore, either one, the other, or neither of them could be realized, and there’s an opportunity for overlap between them.
Web 3.0 along with the metaverse is likely to be built on blockchain technology that will enable a degree of openness. The two are likely to both be highly advanced technology that will evolve over time. Both will depend on the latest web technology to evolve.
Additionally, both entities are likely to use artificial intelligence to provide an easier experience. We can anticipate Web 3.0 to use AI to create semantic correlations, and the metaverse will use AI to assist with 3D construction.
